Headline: Chile Set to Roll Out Digital Driver’s License in 2025: Key Dates and Regions
Article:
After six years of legislative process, Chile has finally set the date for the introduction of its digital driver’s license. The move, initiated during Sebastián Piñera’s second term and taken forward by the Gabriel Boric administration, is set to transform the way Chileans access and use their driving credentials.
Launch Date Revealed
In a recent announcement, Minister of Transport and Telecommunications Juan Carlos Muñoz confirmed that the digital driver’s license will start being issued on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. From this date, residents of specific regions will be able to download an application for their mobile devices, granting them access to their digital driver’s license.
Minister Muñoz highlighted the significance of this shift, stating, "We are taking a significant step forward by starting to deliver licenses in a digital format. This allows officials to instantly verify the authenticity of a license using a QR code."
Regional Rollout Plan
As previously planned, the digital driver’s license will initially be implemented in Tarapacá and Aysén regions. Throughout 2025, the digitization will progressively expand towards the center of the country. The Santiago Metropolitan Region is expected to be the last to adopt the new system, with implementation scheduled for the second half of 2025.
Accessing the Digital Driver’s License
While the digital license launch is imminent, Minister Muñoz clarified that not everyone will be able to obtain it immediately. During the initial phase, the digital license will only be available to those renewing their license or applying for one for the first time.
Moreover, the minister emphasized that holders of valid physical licenses do not need to apply for the digital version until their current license expires.
