A 42-year-old man, Budianto Sitepu, died in custody after being arrested by six officers from the Medan Polrestabes on charges of assaulting and threatening a police officer. The incident, which occurred in Deli Serdang, has sparked public outrage and calls for justice.
Kapolrestabes Medan, Kombes Pol Gidion Arif Setyawan, confirmed the arrest and subsequent death of Budianto. He explained that Budianto was taken into custody after allegedly threatening an officer who had asked him to lower the volume of music playing at a nearby tuak warung, where Budianto was drinking with two companions.
The arrest took place around midnight on Wednesday, December 25, 2024. Budianto was later rushed to the hospital after complaining of feeling unwell in custody. He passed away at 10:34 AM on Thursday, December 26, 2024.
Gidion acknowledged that there was excessive force used by the arresting officers. An investigation is currently underway to determine if any of the six officers involved violated regulations or standard operating procedures. Autopsy results are also awaited.
