Breaking News: Sheinbaum Publishes Unadjusted 2025 Budget on Christmas Eve

In an unusual move, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum published the Budget of Expenditures of the Federation (PEF) for the 2025 Exercise in the Official Gazette on Christmas Eve. This comes as a surprise as the budget was approved by the Chamber of Deputies without any adjustments to the National Electoral Institute (INE) or the Judiciary, which face significant cuts.

The budget totals MXN 9,302,150,800,800 and includes recessions amounting to MXN 44,421,781,300. The most significant cut of MXN 14,420 million affects the Judiciary, with the following breakdown:

  • Council of the Judiciary: MXN 13,117 million
  • Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation: MXN 714 million
  • Electoral Tribunal of the Judiciary of the Federation: MXN 210 million

The INE faces a static cut of MXN 13,476 million, equivalent to its request to organize the federal election next year. However, the authorized funds appear insufficient to cover the needs of the election.

Other notable cuts include:

  • Legislative Power: MXN 540,500,000 (Senate: MXN 123,900,000; Superior Audit of the Federation: MXN 416,600,000)
  • Institute of Federal Telecommunications (IFT): MXN 1,180 million
  • Federal Competition Economic Commission (COFECE): MXN 488 million
  • Transparency, Access to Information, and Personal Data Protection Institute (INAI): MXN 494 million

The cuts also affect the federal government, with reductions for the Presidency of the Republic (MXN 44 million), Secretary of the Interior (MXN 1,126,901,000), and Secretary of Economy (MXN 64,459,697).
