Miltone Launches Faithful Recreation of Oberheim Four Voice System

Paris-based firm Miltone has launched the 4Exp, a hardware recreation of the iconic Oberheim Four Voice System (FVS). According to creator Manfred Veber, the instrument serves as both a standalone four-voice synthesizer and an expansion unit for original vintage units. The first 50 hand-built, numbered units are currently available for pre-order, with pricing starting at €9,990 for the aluminium version and €11,990 for the Tolex-wrapped model.

Architectural Fidelity and Modern Upgrades

The 4Exp maintains the original 1975 architecture that defined the Oberheim Four Voice System. Each of the four voices is powered by an independent Synthesizer Expander Module (SEM), functioning as a complete monophonic synthesizer.

While the internal circuitry remains faithful to the original, Veber noted that the 4Exp incorporates modern printed circuit boards and an updated power supply to ensure reliability. The output module provides individual per-voice volume and panning, alongside stereo outputs and dual headphone jacks.

From Restoration to Replication

The development of the 4Exp grew out of Manfred Veber’s work as a synth technician specializing in vintage Oberheim restoration. Because the original components were frequently unavailable, Veber’s workshop began manufacturing replacement parts to keep legacy systems operational.

“We already had in mind the idea that we could remake the whole SEM exactly like it was with those new parts, as everything else is still quite easy to source,” Veber told Resident Advisor. “Then the idea of proposing a complete replica (not just an approximate clone) made much more sense.”

Expanding the Vintage Ecosystem

While the initial design goal was to create an extension for existing Four Voice System owners, the Miltone team pivoted to ensure broader usability. The final version of the 4Exp includes MIDI and CV/Gate triggering capabilities. This design choice allows modern producers to integrate the classic four-voice sound into contemporary studio setups without requiring a vintage controller keyboard.

Comparison: Miltone 4Exp vs. Vintage Units

Feature Vintage FVS Miltone 4Exp
Circuitry Original 1970s discrete components Modern PCBs with original-spec components
Connectivity Proprietary/CV MIDI or CV/Gate
Power Supply Original vintage PSU Updated modern PSU
Pro Tip:

If you are looking to integrate analog polyphony into a DAW-based workflow, look for units like the 4Exp that offer modern MIDI implementation, as this removes the need for external voltage converters.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can the 4Exp expand an original Oberheim Four Voice System?
Yes, the unit is designed to function as an expansion that can increase an original system to eight voices.
  • What is the difference between the two 4Exp models?
The primary difference is the chassis material; one version features an aluminium housing, while the other is finished in classic Tolex.
  • Is the 4Exp an analog synthesizer?
Yes, it utilizes discrete VCOs and state-variable filters to replicate the original analog architecture of the 1975 SEM.
