Headline: Norway‘s Fjord Areas Face Increased Risk of Landslides on Monday
Environmental authorities in Norway are warning residents and visitors in fjord areas about heightened landslide risks due to heavy rainfall and saturated soil expected on Monday. The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) has issued weather warnings for several regions across the country.
Experts at NVE explain that high rainfall combined with soil already saturated from recent downpours can set off landslides, especially in areas with steep slopes and loose material. These include the western and southern parts of Norway, where many popular tourist destinations are located.
"Landslides can happen quickly and without warning," said a spokesperson for NVE. "We urge everyone in affected areas to stay vigilant and be prepared to evacuate if necessary."
Residents and tourists are advised to avoid areas prone to landslides, such as the proximity of steep slopes, the bottom of valleys, or near streams and rivers that could suddenly swell. Those living in at-risk homes should have an emergency plan ready and keep important items packed in case of a sudden evacuation.
The weather forecast indicates a subdued pressure area moving eastwards across Norway on Monday, bringing with it heavy rainfall and strong winds. This system is expected to cause significant increases in river levels and localized flooding, further exacerbating landslide risks.
The NVE encourages everyone to keep an eye on the weather updates and follow the advice of local authorities. For real-time updates and advice, visit the NVE’s website or follow their social media channels.
