Motorcyclist Shocked by Massive Fine for SIM Card and Helmet Offenses
A motorcyclist was left stunned after being slapped with a hefty fine of Rp1.25 trillion, approximately USD88.5 million, that’s more than ten times Indonesia‘s annual GDP per capita! The reason? He was caught riding without a helmet and with an expired SIM card. This waving of traffic fines might seem incomprehensible, but here’s what you need to know.
The incident occurred in Jakarta, with the motorcyclist, identified only by his initials ‘AD’, contesting the exorbitant fine. Unfortunately, ‘AD’ is not alone in his struggles. Many motorcyclists in Indonesia face heavy penalties for not wearing helmets or having invalid SIM cards.
The Law Behind the Fine
Indonesia’s traffic laws (Law No. 22/2009 and Government Regulation No. 101/2010) impose severe penalties for such offenses. The fine for not wearing a helmet can reach up to Rp250,000, and driving without a valid SIM card can result in a fine of up to Rp1 million. However, these penalties are clearly not being accurately enforced.
What’s Being Done?
The uproar surrounding ‘AD’s’ case has prompted the Indonesian police and Ministry of Transport to review traffic fine regulations and enforcement processes. Police have acknowledged the need to clarify the penalties and ensure they are applied fairly and consistently.
