Prior to Doha, Sakkari was in a prolonged slump, recording only one quarterfinal appearance in the last 12 months and even dropping to 92nd in the rankings last May. The rapid ascent of Victoria Mboko will be tested by Grand Slam champion Jelena Ostapenko, who is very successful in Doha and knows how to handle critical matches.

Ostapenko will play in the Doha semifinals for the fourth time in her career and has a positive 2-1 record in this stage. She has already won eight consecutive sets in the tournament. She started with a comeback against Anastasia Zacharova and then defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova, Camila Osorio, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto without dropping a set.
