Comedian and documentary maker Munya Chawawa is stepping away from social media to make his stage acting debut as Bottom in a 1990s-inspired production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Chichester Festival Theatre, citing a digital landscape that has become increasingly difficult for creatives to navigate.
After nearly a decade of building an online audience through satirical short-form videos and characters like the upper-class drill rapper Unknown P and chef Jonny Oliver, Munya Chawawa is shifting his creative focus toward live theatre. According to reporting from Ian Youngs for BBC News, the 33-year-old creator is making his stage acting debut in Shakespeare’s romantic comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Chichester Festival Theatre in West Sussex.
Stepping Away From Digital Overload and Algorithm Battles
Chawawa describes his transition as a deliberate move to jump ship from the daily grind of social media, pointing to a digital landscape that has become increasingly difficult for creatives to navigate. According to BBC News, he spent nearly eight years producing short satirical sketches that skyrocketed him into mainstream television, including two Bafta-nominated TV documentaries, starring on Taskmaster, and doing stand-up comedy.
However, Chawawa argues that social media platforms and their algorithms have very much angled themselves against the creatives at the moment, turning the online battle for eyeballs into a little bit of a dogfight, where even good stuff, even really consciously thought-out material, is just lost in a sea of content. He contrasts the current landscape with his teens when social media and smartphones took off, a brief window before ubiquitous cameras turned every fun occasion into recorded content for posterity. I absolutely miss an era where we were dancing for ourselves and not for a digital world somewhere,
he said, adding that if he ventures onto a dance floor now, my two-step has become a lot stiffer
out of anxiety that a wrong move could be filmed and send him viral.
Reimagining Shakespeare in a 1990s Illegal Rave Scene
For his theatrical debut, Chawawa is immersing himself in the counterculture of the United Kingdom’s 1990s illegal rave scene—a time of hedonism and freedom surrounded by political and media panic—which serves as the setting for this modern take on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream opening in Chichester. He noted that he did a super-deep dive into rave culture by watching loads of rave footage from all these little free parties where they would find an empty field before the era of widespread mobile phones and cameras.
In this political reimagining of Shakespeare’s play, Chawawa plays the character of Bottom. In this 90s version, his character is a member of the Young Conservatives and is a very political Bottom,
he says, while Theseus is a Tory MP who has shut down free raves in the county, according to coverage published by BBC News. Preparing for the role has required tackling unfamiliar literary structures. I'm taking notes. I'm learning all of these mad Shakespeare terms like couplets and quatrains and anacreontics and stuff that definitely sounds made up but isn't,

Balancing Theatre Ambitions With Digital Roots
While Chawawa is on a bit of a conscious mission to reduce his phone use—noting that we're all phone addicts
and the average person picks up a phone 200 times a day—he harbors no bitterness toward the medium that launched his career. He credits social media for giving him a certain skill set that skyrocketed him to all the places he wanted to go, leading him toward his ultimate aim of landing on something bigger and onto a new challenge. At the same time, he finds comfort in the analogue anonymity of the past, pointing out that top comments on vintage rave footage frequently express relief from people who enjoyed dancing, getting a little high, or getting too sweaty for too long knowing there was no record of that.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is scheduled to open in Chichester later this month, marking a concrete step into a larger theatrical challenge as Chawawa navigates his post-social-media trajectory.
