In a groundbreaking discovery, astronomers at NASA’s Ames Research Center have found a black hole, NGC 5084, exhibiting unusual behavior. Unlike most black holes that rotate in sync with their host galaxies, NGC 5084 is moving in the opposite direction, challenging our understanding of these cosmic phenomena.

First discovered by German astronomer William Herschel in the late 18th century, NGC 5084’s peculiar rotation was only recently uncovered using a novel technique called Saunas (Selective Amplification of Ultra Noisy Astronomical Signal). This method, applied to archival data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, revealed four massive jets of X-ray emissions extending from the black hole. Two of these jets align with the galactic plane, while the others point upwards and downwards, as reported by Universe Today.

"This is highly unusual," said Dr. Pamela Marcum, an astrophysicist involved in the study. "Finding four jets in one galaxy, and two of them aligned with the galactic plane, is extraordinary."

To gain further insights, the team analyzed data from other telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). They also used the Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) to study the galactic core, uncovering more anomalies.

The combination of these findings suggests a complex history for NGC 5084’s host galaxy, with the black hole’s unusual rotation and jet emissions offering new clues about its evolution.
