NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has underscored Germany‘s unparalleled support for Ukraine, urging gratitude towards Chancellor Olaf Scholz, amidst criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In a recent statement, Stoltenberg emphasized, "I’ve frequently advised President Zelensky to cease criticizing Olaf Scholz, as I find it unjustified." He noted that Germany’s backing is unprecedented in scale, second only to the United States, and amounts to approximately 28 to 34 billion euros—far surpassing contributions from many other nations, including major European economies.

Stoltenberg commended Scholz’s efforts, stating, "What Olaf Scholz has accomplished is truly impressive." However, he acknowledged differing views on certain aspects, such as the supply of Taurus winged missiles to Ukraine. While Stoltenberg personally might have taken a different stance, he emphasized that it’s up to allies to decide what aid to provide.

Stoltenberg also underscored the significance of Germany acknowledging that its Ukraine policy directly impacts its own values and collective security. He warned, "If Ukraine were to lose, we’d have to invest far more in defense to counter the Russian threat."

Zelensky has previously criticized Scholz, notably for engaging in telephone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and for withholding Taurus missiles. However, Stoltenberg’s remarks highlight the strategic importance of Germany’s role in the conflict.

Scholz, meanwhile, has drawn criticism for his decision to speak with Putin in November, breaking a long silence. Although he defended his actions, expressing a desire for open dialogue. Recently, reports surfaced that Scholz plans a potential Moscow visit, potentially boosting his pre-election prospects.

Lastly, on December 20, Scholz announced Germany’s delivery of another IRIS-T air defense system to Ukraine.
