  • Alcohol-related Hospitalizations Surge at Erasmus MC
  • Eleven Vuurwerk Injuries Reported; 13-year-old Suffers Permanent Eye Damage
  • Children Affected: Vuurwerk Injuries at SEH and Ziekenhuizen in Zuidoost-Brabant

The festivities marking the arrival of 2023 brought an unexpected surge in alcohol-related incidents, with the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam seeing an influx of patients affected by drunkenness rather than fireworks-related injuries.

"People were so drunk, they ended up in their own vomit."said a spokesperson for the hospital, highlighting the reckless behavior exhibited by some revellers. This echoes concerns voiced by professionals nationwide, who warn of the dangers of excessive drinking.

Vuurwerk-related injuries were also a cause for concern, with the Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen (UMCG) reporting eleven casualties due to fireworks misuse. Shockingly, a 13-year-old child sustained serious, permanent eye damage, according to RTV Noord.

The Spectra(tm) eye hospital in The Hague (SEH) and Ziekenhuizen in Zuidoost-Brabant also witnessed children suffering from vuurwerk injuries, underscoring the risk fireworks pose to youngsters.

Despite the annual reminder to handle fireworks with caution and the cancellation of some planned New Year’s dives, people still found themselves in dangerous situations. Two children were rescued from the sea in Zandvoort, after braving the icy waters.

Healthcare providers urge caution and responsible behavior this festive season. "People need to realize when they’ve had enough to drink and act accordingly," a spokesperson warned. "And, when handling vuurwerk, always follow the rules and never leave children unsupervised around fireworks."

As the country recovers from New Year’s Eve, it’s essential to reflect on the lessons learned and prioritize safety in future celebrations.
