According to MetService meteorologist Michael Pawley, the widespread cold snap brought sub-zero air temperatures as far north as Auckland, with frosty conditions reported across much of the country.

MetService data confirmed that Auckland Airport recorded 2.5C, while Christchurch Airport reached -3.8C and Taupo Airport dropped to -4.2C. Mount Cook Airport saw conditions hit -11.5C. In the North Island, the central plateau experienced lows of -6.2C. While air temperatures were stark, Pawley noted that ground temperatures can dip an additional 4C lower than the air, with one station inland from Northland recording 1C.
Transition to warmer air and unsettled weather
Relief from the freezing conditions is expected early this week as a front moves in from the Tasman Sea. Northwesterlies are forecast to drag warmer air across the country, with Christchurch expected to reach a maximum of 17C on Tuesday before cooling to an overnight low of 8C on Wednesday. However, this shift brings its own challenges. The incoming front is expected to deliver rain to western areas—particularly the South Island—throughout Monday and Tuesday, accompanied by potential thunderstorms and strong wind gusts.
Regional outlook and severe weather risk
Weather conditions are likely to remain a “mixed bag” for the remainder of the week, according to Pawley. A low risk of severe gales remains in effect for Fiordland, inland Otago, and the Canterbury high country on Tuesday, though MetService expects the risk of warning-level severe weather to ease between Wednesday and Friday. While Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, and the Bay of Plenty may see some fine spells, they will also contend with intermittent cloud and showers. For those looking for drier conditions, Pawley identified Christchurch and Hawke’s Bay as the most likely areas to see fine breaks.
Impact on ski fields and future uncertainty
The impact on high-altitude regions remains minimal for now. Because the current front is fast-moving, accumulations of snow are not expected to be significant, though a light dusting may occur on elevated runs. Looking ahead, MetService indicates there is currently uncertainty between different weather models regarding the latter half of the week. Forecasters will continue to monitor whether subsequent rain and showers bring additional snowfall to the mountains.
