Impact of Foster Care on Children: Concerns Raised After 100 Days
Amsterdam, Netherlands – A recently retired Dutch social worker, Nicolaas Veul, has expressed growing concerns about the impact of foster care on children after his 100-day experience in the youth welfare system. Veul, 40, spent three months embedded in the city’s youth care services to gain firsthand insights into its workings.
*Sommige kinderen vertrekken met problems die ze niet hadden,' (Some children leave with problems they didn't have,) Veul told Het Parool, highlighting his main worry. Despite his 20 years in the profession, this revelation caught him off guard.
Veul observed that children entering the foster care system would often display improved behavior and increased happiness within the early stages. However, as time progresses, many began to exhibit new issues or exacerbated existing ones.
