Semarang, Indonesia — A staggering Rp2 billion per semester was extorted from female students at the anesthesia department of Gadjah Mada University’s Faculty of Medicine (FK Undip), according to the Central Java Police’s director of criminal investigations, Kombes Pol Dwi Subagio.

The funds were raised through intimidation and forced contributions, ultimately leading to the tragic demise of Dr. Aulia Risma Lestari, a fourth-semester student in the Postgraduate Clinical Studies (PPDS) in Anesthesia program. "The total amount is around Rp2 billion per semester. The Rp97 million we’ve confiscated is just from one victim, Aulia," Subagio revealed on Friday, December 27.

Three key figures have been implicated in this case: the Head of the Anesthesiology Program at FK Undip, Dr. Taufik Eko Nugroho, and staff member Dr. Sri Maryani, along with senior student Dr. Zara Yupita Azra. They were involved in soliciting contributions from junior students for operational costs that were not academically defined.

Dr. Zara played an active role in bullying juniors and imposing rules, with Aulia Risma serving as the department’s treasurer.

Based on recovered evidence, including handwritten notes, the total extorted per semester is indeed around Rp2 billion, Subagio confirmed. The money wasn’t centralized in one account.

"We have testimonies from 38 witnesses and 4 expert witnesses, including those specializing in criminal law and psychological forensics," he added.

A subpoena for the trio to appear for questioning as suspects has been sent. Their official summons will likely commence in early January 2025.
