Revolution in Nighttime Photography: Aurora Borealis, Google’s Night Sight, and the Rise of Smartphone Astrophotography
In recent years, the increasing accessibility of capturing aurora borealis and nighttime landscapes has sparked a global phenomenon, enabling more individuals to experience and share the magic of the night sky. This shift can be attributed to advancements in smartphone camera technology and user-friendly editing applications.
The Role of Technology in Nighttime Imaging
The emergence of cameras that could discern light before the peak of solar cycle 11, such as those observed in southern Florida, heralded a new era in nighttime photography. In 2018, Google’s Pixel camera introduced "Night Sight," allowing users to capture sharper, more vibrant images in low-light conditions. Apple’s iPhone followed suit with its "Night Mode" feature the subsequent year.
Dr. Sean J. Bentley, a physics professor at Adelphi University in Garden City, New York, attests to these technological strides. "Compared to the peak of the last solar cycle in early 2014, the improvement in camera technology is astonishing," he said. "Whereas most digital cameras, including those on smartphones, struggled to capture clear images of even bright, stable objects like the moon, let alone auroras, today’s phones can produce stunning photographs of the night sky."
A Boom in Aurora Tourism
The proliferation of capable camera phones has also fueled a surge in aurora tourism. Gondwana Ecotours, which began offering Northern Lights tours in Fairbanks, Alaska, in 2013, has seen a 20 percent increase in bookings over the past two seasons. Jared Sternberg, the company’s president, attributes this growth to the ease of capturing impressive aurora images using smartphones.
"When we started these tours, taking photos of the aurora with a phone was nearly impossible," Sternberg said. "Now, iPhones and other smartphones can capture more than just acceptable aurora images—they can produce stunning, share-worthy content."
