Norwegian Brewery Workers Reach Agreement, Avoiding Strike

by Chief Editor

A labor agreement has been reached in the brewing and mineral water industry, narrowly averting a strike that would have impacted hundreds of workers just before the May 17 celebrations. The resolution ensures that the upcoming festivities, which often involve significant outdoor consumption, will proceed without industrial disruption.

The settlement was finalized during mediation at Riksmekleren, concluding nearly two hours into overtime. The breakthrough comes after voluntary negotiations had previously broken down in late April.

Wage Increases and Economic Terms

The negotiated settlement provides real wage growth within an economic framework consistent with the “frontfag” (the leading sector settlement). Under the new terms, all workers will receive a general increase of 6.50 NOK per hour, effective from May 1.

This increase brings the minimum wage to 236.09 NOK per hour, which includes the general supplement. Seniority supplements will be adjusted as part of the package.

“It has been several difficult questions in the mediation, but we are satisfied with having reached a solution and avoided a strike,” said Petter Haas Brubakk of NHO Mat og Drikke.

Resolving the Sick Pay Dispute

A central theme during the mediation was the disagreement regarding the advance payment of sick pay. The parties have now reached a consensus on this issue.

All companies covered by the brewery and mineral water agreement must either maintain existing advance payment schemes through a special agreement or enter into a new special agreement regarding sick pay advances by April 1, 2027. Petter Haas Brubakk noted that while the parties agree employees should receive sick pay in a timely manner, the responsibility for this lies with Nav rather than the companies.

Expert Insight: By establishing a clear deadline of 2027 for special agreements regarding sick pay, the parties have addressed a major point of contention, allowing for stability in the industry’s economic framework.

Scope of the Potential Strike

Had the negotiations failed, the strike would have involved 887 employees across 32 breweries and mineral water factories nationwide. The potential disruption would have affected several major entities, including:
