Norwegian Adventurer Spends Sixth Straight Christmas Alone in the Wild with His Dogs
Article:
In the heart of Norway, as the scent of Christmas dinner fills thousands of homes, adventurer Bengt-Are Barstad has prepared the prime rib in his outer tent. "This year, it’s classic Christmas dinner," he tells Dagbladet. "I had some lutefisk earlier today, and soon I’ll enjoy ribbe cooked in smoked tea!"
The 52-year-old, who has spent the past weeks in a dense forest near Tunnsjøen in Trøndelag, is no stranger to solitude. This is his sixth consecutive Christmas alone, accompanied only by his loyal husky dogs. "Being out here, I’m at one with nature," he says contentedly. "Nothing can bother me here."
Bengt-Are has been living outdoors since 2019, having not set foot indoors even once since then. His father recently visited, bringing Christmas provisions, including marzipan, almonds, and figs – treats that remind him of Christmases past.
Despite his remote lifestyle, Bengt-Are hasn’t missed out on the festive cheer. He’s decorated his tent with string lights and figurines, creating a cozy atmosphere for the holidays. On Christmas Eve, he plans to light a few candles and enjoy a quiet moment of reflection before indulging in the prime rib by a roaring bonfire.
The adventurer, who has a 2000-days-outdoor project, shares his experiences on Instagram and Facebook. His goal is to live outdoors exclusively for six years, a challenge he’s confident he’ll meet – and then some.
Life in the wild isn’t always easy, Bengt-Are admits. He’s faced harsh storms and even experienced moments of existential fear. But he finds solace in the simple pleasures of nature and the companionship of his dogs. "I’ve never been tempted to leave," he says. "Here, we find our peace – and we celebrate Christmas our own way."
