Novak Djokovic, the 37-year-old tennis phenomenon, has broken his silence regarding his deportation from Australia in 2022, expressing his support for freedom of choice in vaccinations while asserting that his removal was "highly political" rather than a health concern.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion, who is set to return to Melbourne in 2024, initially had his visa cancelled due to his unvaccinated status, leading to a controversial detention and eventual deportation before the Australian Open. Djokovic recent spoke to GQ about the events, offering insight into his perspective for the first time.

"I’m not anti-vaccine. I’m pro-freedom," Djokovic stated. "I believe in choice. I think if you want to get vaccinated, that’s up to you. It’s your decision, and I respect it. But I don’t understand why someone else would want to take away my right to choose what goes into my body."

Djokovic emphasized his decision was not based on fear or denial of COVID-19 or vaccines but rather a commitment to personal freedom and bodily autonomy. The professional athlete, who has consistently prioritized his health through rigorous diet and regular medical checks, expressed confidence in his own immunity and did not feel a personal need for vaccination.

Reflecting on his deportation, Djokovic maintained that the incident was more about politics than public health. "It had nothing to do with COVID, nothing to do with the vaccine, and everything to do with politics," he explained. "The politicians didn’t want me there, so they made a decision to deport me rather than keep me in Australia."

Despite the controversy, Djokovic returned to the Australian Open in 2023, where he was warmly received by fans and successfully defended his title. Throughout the year, the Serbian star also added wins at the French Open and US Open, showcasing his enduring dominance in tennis.

As Djokovic prepares for his return to Melbourne in 2024, his stance on vaccines and freedom of choice continues to be a topic of conversation in the sports world and beyond. While his views remain divisive, the tennis great’s commitment to personal autonomy and open dialogue has sparked important discussions about the balance between individual rights and public health considerations.
