Pakistan in Talks to Acquire 40 China‘s Stealth Jet Fighters, Challenging F-35Dominance

BEIJING – Pakistan, the only Islamic nation with nuclear capabilities, is reportedly in negotiations with China to purchase 40 units of the advanced J-35A stealth fighter jets, potentially inaugurating a new era in military aviation and regional power dynamics.

The J-35A, China’s latest and most sophisticated stealth aircraft, poses a direct challenge to the dominance of the US’ F-35 stealth fighters. Currently, the global stealth fighter market is dominated by the F-35, with the J-35A being its closest and potentially most formidable competitor. If talks between Beijing and Islamabad conclude successfully, Pakistan would become the first and only country outside of China to operate a squadron of J-35A stealth fighters, marking a significant milestone in China’s military export history.

The J-35A, China’s second domestically developed fifth-generation stealth fighter, offers multi-role capabilities, including air-to-air and air-to-ground strikes. Pakistani officials have expressed interest in phasing out their aging fleet of F-16s and Mirage aircraft, seeking to replace them with the superior J-35A stealth fighters.

According to the South China Morning Post, China aims to deliver all 40 stealth fighters to Pakistan within the next two years. The report highlights China’s self-sufficiency in military production, with all components of the J-35A manufactured domestically, reducing the risk of supply chain disruptions or export controls.

The Pakistani Air Force has already approved the procurement of the J-35A stealth fighters, although Beijing has yet to confirm the deal officially. Should this deal materialize, it would significantly bolster Pakistan’s air defense capabilities and potentially reshape regional balances of power, as Islamabad gains access to advanced stealth technology.

About the J-35A Stealth Fighter

The Shenyang J-35A is a fifth-generation, twin-engine, single-seater stealth fighter designed for multi-role operations over land and sea. As China’s second indigenous fifth-generation stealth aircraft, following the J-20, the J-35A incorporates numerous advanced features, such as internal weapon bays, supercruise capabilities, and advanced avionics, enabling it to excel in both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.

As talks between Pakistan and China progress, the global defense community watches with keen interest, awaiting a development that could have far-reaching implications for the regional security landscape and the global balance of power.
