Arrests Made in Penn Station Arson

Damon Johnson, 47, of Brooklyn, and Lyla Najjar, 33, of Queens, have been arrested by police. Johnson was arrested immediately following the incident, although Najjar was arrested yesterday.

Did You Know? Damon Johnson has approximately 131 prior arrests dating back to 1995.

According to witnesses, the victim was sleeping or lying in an old taxiway when the attack occurred. “You look up above the escalator, there’s a gentleman on fire, flames completely engulfed, he’s running back and forth trying to get it out, people are trying to pat him down,” said witness Sam Stalone.

Surveillance video showed Amtrak police responding to the scene. Bystanders and first responders were able to extinguish the fire, but the victim sustained second-degree burns to his arm and back and was transported to a hospital.

Police believe Johnson set the victim’s jacket on fire and was observed crouching and leaning over the victim before walking away. He has been charged with attempted murder, assault, and reckless endangerment and pleaded not guilty. He is being held without bail.

In 2018, Johnson slashed a student’s face during a robbery and stole cash from his pockets, resulting in the victim requiring over 100 stitches. He was on parole at the time of the Penn Station incident. Najjar has been charged with assault and has five prior arrests.

Expert Insight: The arrest of a parolee with an extensive criminal history underscores the complexities of balancing public safety with rehabilitation and re-entry programs. The details of this case, while disturbing, highlight the potential consequences when individuals with a history of violent offenses are released back into the community.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the arson attack.
