President Joe Biden announced a significant move towards environmental conservation on Friday, signing an executive order to ban new oil and gas leases and drilling in U.S. coastal waters. This policy shift, mere days after President Donald Trump’s departure, highlights Biden’s commitment to balancing environmental protection with economic growth and energy affordability.
The ban, as outlined by the White House, encompasses the Atlantic, Pacific, and eastern Gulf of Mexico coasts, as well as the northern coast of Alaska’s Beaufort Sea. Biden maintained that this decision was a necessity to safeguard cherished landscapes and was unnecessary for meeting the nation’s energy needs.
"Protecting our coasts and our communities is crucial," Biden said. "The oil and gas industry’s lease sales in these sensitive areas would present significant, and in many cases, intolerable risks."
The new president argued that draws between environmental protection and energy affordability are "false choices." He believes that protecting coastlines can coexist with a strong economy and affordable energy prices, contrary to the energy policies advocated by his predecessor, Donald Trump.
Trump, during his tenure and presidential campaign, advocated for expanded oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, lifting restrictions on Arctic drilling, and relaxing vehicle emission standards. In contrast, Biden sees the need to prioritize climate change mitigation and enrich wildlife preservation through robust environmental policies.
"Today’s action builds on the broad range of steps we’ve already begun to further prioritize climate change and environmental justice," added a senior administration official. This ban is part of a broader plan to transition towards a clean energy future while creating jobs and stimulating economic growth.
