Ombudsman Set to Defend Juddmonte International Title at York

Ombudsman, the five-year-old Godolphin-owned, is set to headline the Sky Bet Ebor Festival at York as he targets a repeat victory in the Group 1 Juddmonte International. Having remained undefeated throughout 2026, the horse is currently undergoing a specialized training program to prepare for the £1.5m feature race.

Ombudsman’s Path to the Juddmonte International

According to trainer John Gosden, the decision to target the Juddmonte International follows a strategic “winter-spring campaign” that began as early as December. Ombudsman’s season was highlighted by a four-length victory in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. To maintain the horse’s performance levels, the Clarehaven Stables team has focused on a schedule that allows for recovery periods between major engagements.

“He’s a horse who’s got a wonderful mind, good constitution,” John Gosden stated, noting that the horse’s training routine is designed to keep him fresh without overexertion. Preparations for the York festival are currently on track, with Devil’s Advocate once again expected to provide essential pacemaking duties for the star runner.

Trawlerman and Legacy Link: Stable Contenders

The Gosden yard is also preparing other high-profile runners for the four-day festival. Trawlerman, an eight-year-old who claimed victory in the Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup at York last year, is currently being aimed at the same race. Despite a challenging run at the Goodwood Cup where he was impacted by a loose horse, the team reports that he remains in good order.

Legacy Link, the winner of the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes, is entered for the Yorkshire Oaks. Following a second-place finish in the Epsom Oaks and a mid-division placement in the Ribblesdale Stakes, the filly is currently training well. John Gosden noted that the team is monitoring ground conditions, as the horse would benefit from rain ahead of the meeting.

Strategic Expansion with Superior Choice

The Great Voltigeur Stakes will feature the progressive runner Superior Choice, representing the Gosden stable in the £250,000 Group 2 contest. Having secured a victory in Listed company at Hamilton, the horse is being stepped up in both class and distance. John Gosden indicated that the mile-and-a-half distance of the Voltigeur likely represents the upper limit of the horse’s current range.
