OpenAI is preparing to enter the consumer hardware market with a mobile, screen-free smart speaker designed to function as a home computer for the AI era. The device, which is currently under development, is intended to serve as a “humanlike AI companion” within the home, according to people familiar with the project.
Design and Functional Capabilities
The speaker is designed to move beyond traditional smart home interfaces by acting as a proactive, personalized assistant. According to reports, the device will control smart-home appliances, play media, answer questions, and respond to messages by leveraging the capabilities of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Internally, OpenAI describes the product as the first of its kind—a computer specifically engineered for artificial intelligence to improve user productivity.
To distinguish the device from conventional smart speakers, OpenAI has incorporated several unique features:
- Mechanical Autonomy: The device includes mechanical elements that allow it to move on its own, intended to create a sense that the machine is a living companion rather than a static object.
- Advanced Sensing: It is equipped with a camera and sensors to better understand a user’s context and surroundings.

OpenAI’s hardware ambitions are being driven by a team with significant experience in consumer electronics. Ive’s studio, LoveFrom, is currently assisting in the development of the device lineup. The project involves numerous former Apple engineers and designers who previously worked on the iPhone and Mac, with OpenAI betting on their expertise to make the technology feel distinct and personal.
The hardware division is led by OpenAI Chief Hardware Officer Tang Tan, a co-founder of io Products and the former head of iPhone product design at Apple. Beyond this speaker, OpenAI is reportedly developing approximately five different physical products, with some internal interest in creating a device that could eventually replace the smartphone.
Legal Challenges and Market Competition
The push into hardware has placed OpenAI in direct competition with established tech giants, including Apple, Amazon, and Google. This move has also triggered a significant legal conflict. Last week, Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that the company used stolen trade secrets to accelerate its hardware development. The lawsuit specifically accuses Tang Tan of leading a campaign to obtain confidential information regarding Apple’s engineering practices and future products. Apple also alleges that OpenAI has hired more than 400 former Apple employees.
In response, OpenAI has stated that while it takes the allegations seriously, it is not aware of any evidence that the complaint has merit. Sources familiar with OpenAI’s position suggest the company believes its new speaker differs significantly from any product currently offered by Apple and is unlikely to violate trade secrets. OpenAI has declined to comment publicly on the matter, and company officials noted that the project is still under development, meaning plans could shift as the legal process unfolds.
