Headline: Severe Weather Alert: Bulgaria Braces for Significant Snow and Rainfall
Subheadline: National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology Issues Orange and Yellow warnings for several regions
Article:
Bulgaria is bracing for a significant weather event, as the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has issued an orange code (second-degree) warning for heavy snow and rain in nine regions. The affected areas include Vratza, Gabrovo, Lovech, Montana, Pleven, Ruse, Smolyan, Sofia region, and Turgovishte. The orange code is reserved for weather conditions that pose a significant threat to life and property.
Additionally, NIMH has released a first-degree (yellow) warning for heavy rain and snow, as well as strong winds and rain in 16 regions across the country. The eastern parts of the country are expected to experience particularly harsh conditions.
The weather situation is expected to deteriorate further over the next 24 hours. Moderate to strong winds from the north-northeast are set to bring cold air into the country. The forecast calls for widespread, and in some areas, heavy precipitation, with snow in the Pre-Balkan region and high elevations, and rain elsewhere. As temperatures drop in Central and North Bulgaria, and later in the Ludogorie region, rain will transition to snow.
Temperatures are expected to vary widely, from around -1°C in the western lowlands to 8°C-10°C along the Black Sea coast. Maximum temperatures will generally range between 2°C and 7°C, with higher values of up to 10°C-12°C along the Black Sea coast.
Bulgarians are advised to take necessary precautions and stay informed about the latest weather developments. For more information on expected temperatures during the upcoming holiday season, you can read our related article, "What Temperatures to Expect This Christmas".
