Former television host Nana Gladuish opened up about her 14-year battle with cancer, detailing family tragedies and medical challenges in an emotional interview with Мон Дьо on NOVA.
According to Gladuish, both her grandmother and father died from the disease. Her grandmother passed away from ovarian cancer, while her father died of lung cancer. “My grandmother died of ovarian cancer, my father of lung cancer, and my cancer didn’t happen to a person,” Gladuish said, noting that she continues her fight.
Family Illnesses and Final Moments
Gladuish’s sister also suffered from cancer. The family learned about her father’s diagnosis at the very last moment, when they discovered he had less than a month to live, according to the interview. He read his own diagnosis, understood everything, and refused to speak about the topic.
“It was when we found out he had less than a month left,” Gladuish shared through tears, describing how her father watched her leave from Varna to Sofia with her husband. “And when down from the street, I lifted my head to see him because he was seeing me off, I saw this ‘sea wolf’ and in his eyes there was everything – the fear that he would not accompany us for a longer period of time, the brokenness from the heavy diagnosis, and everything else.”
Gladuish also spoke about her mother’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease. “This agony was long and very heavy,” she said, recalling how they would sit together on the bed and hug in silence.
Did You Know? Nana Gladuish was 38 years old when she received her first cancer diagnosis in 2012, at which time her child was 2 years and 7 months old.
The Second Diagnosis and Treatment Journey
Gladuish learned her sister was also ill while she was in Israel confirming her second cancer diagnosis. “I threw myself to save her and forgot about myself,” she said. “I felt like a person who is pressed against the wall and someone pointed a ‘Kalashnikov’ at me.”
Reflecting on her first diagnosis in 2012, Gladuish recalled feeling immense fear. At the five-year mark, following a clear MRI scan and seeing a worried couple at the hospital, she had briefly believed she was safe. However, just two hours after completing a subsequent MRI, the hospital called her back. “In the moment I allowed myself to partially release this fear from my consciousness, the wave simply flooded me,” she explained.
Gladuish detailed the extensive medical interventions she has endured over the years, stating, “Cancer has worn my clothes, sat at my table, slept in my bed. For 14 years I have been taking my pill every night. I have survived biopsies, surgeries, 2 chemotherapies, 2 targeted therapies, 2 radiotherapies, hormonal therapies, and more and more.”
