Belgian Hospitals Overwhelmed by Viral Infections; Spike in Patients Seeking Care

The influx of patients has left hospitals, including the CHU in Liège, saturated. Sources indicate that the number of patients with viral infections has doubled in recent weeks, with hospitals struggling to manage the sudden increase in cases.
"I’ve never seen anything like this," said Dr. Marie-Pierre Leclercq, a spokesperson for the Belgianiciosities of the Belgian Association of Intensive Care Medicine. "It’s as if the pandemic has opened the floodgates for other viral infections."
The rapid spread of these infections has been attributed to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and the subsequent mixing of populations. The viruses, taking advantage of the opportunity, are circulating at an unprecedented rate, leaving hospitals grappling with the consequences.
In response to the crisis, hospitals are implementing contingency plans, including the referral of non-critical patients to other facilities and the reallocation of staff. "We’re doing our best to manage the situation, but this is a significant challenge," said Dr. Leclercq. "We need more staff, more beds, and more resources to handle this influx."
