Regional Officials Acknowledge Increased Pressure, Cite Success of Influenza Points; Opposition Criticizes Lack of Preparedness

Genova, Italy – Liguria’s hospitals are grappling with a critical surge in patients, with emergency rooms in the region’s major cities swamped and struggling to cope, according to real-time data from the pslive portal. The situation was particularly dire in Genova, where all major hospitals were either critically or moderately overwhelmed as of 4:30 PM today.
At Villa Scassi, 74 patients were being treated, including 10 in critical condition, with 32 more waiting for treatment. Galliera Hospital had 72 patients, with 12 in critical condition and 23 waiting, while San Martino Hospital had 115 patients, including 28 in critical condition, with 19 more waiting. These figures underscore the pressing need for addrressing the region’s healthcare crisis.
Massimo Nicolò, Liguria’s Health Assessor, acknowledged the influx, attributing it to the impending influenza peak, with Liguria being among the hardest-hit regions. He emphasized the importance of the new Influenza Points and the upcoming low-complexity studies within the Casa di Comunità, stating, "The path we’ve taken is the right one to reduce pressure on hospitals."
The Regional Government reported that, since December 7, over 2,259 patients have accessed the Influenza Points across Liguria, with posters open even on festive days until January 6. However, Stefano Giordano, regional MoVimento 5 Stelle (M5S) group leader, lambasted the Regional Government for its lack of preparedness. "The executive didn’t lay the groundwork to handle this predictable emergency," Giordano said, citing insufficient guard duty doctors and inadequate resources for hospitals.
Giordano, who visited Genova’s hospitals over the holidays, was particularly alarmed by the working conditions; he reported 400 people waiting and insufficient beds, with patients even being accommodated in areas inappropriate for health and safety reasons. He plans to file a complaint regarding the breach of safety norms for patients and workers.
