Pakistan Issues Formal Protest Over Airspace Violation Amid Escalating Tensions With Afghanistan
Pakistan’s foreign ministry issued a formal demarche to the Afghan embassy in Islamabad on Monday, accusing Afghanistan of violating Pakistani airspace last week, according to a statement released by the ministry. The move comes amid heightened hostilities between the two nations, which have been strained by a series of militant attacks and cross-border military operations.
The dispute follows a Sept. 18 attack on a police compound in Pakistan’s Kohat district that killed 23 people, including 17 officers and six civilians. Pakistan conducted airstrikes in Afghanistan on Sept. 20, claiming to have killed 28 militants, while the Taliban reported three civilian casualties from the strikes. On Sept. 23, Pakistan alleged that drones had entered its airspace from Afghanistan, prompting additional airstrikes on 10 locations in the country.
Tensions Escalate as Accusations Swap Between Neighbors
Pakistan’s foreign ministry spokesman Sajjad Haider Khan confirmed the demarche was issued “on account of air space violation by drones on 23rd September,” according to a statement to Arab News. The move follows Afghanistan’s recent claims that its forces killed 28 fighters and captured 32 others in Nuristan province, alleging that Daesh-affiliated groups operating in the region had received Pakistani support. Islamabad denied the allegations, stating Kabul had provided no evidence to back the claims.
The latest accusations coincide with a surge in militant violence along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. On Sept. 24, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for an attack near the Aman Mela checkpoint in Dera Ismail Khan, killing at least 12 people and wounding over 30. Pakistan has long accused the Taliban-led Afghan government of harboring groups like the TTP, which it says use Afghan territory to launch cross-border attacks. Kabul has consistently denied these claims, calling Pakistan’s security challenges an internal matter.

The current crisis echoes earlier clashes between Pakistani and Afghan forces in October 2022, the deadliest border skirmishes since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.
