A Narrow Escape on Domain Rd
A Bay of Plenty father was forced to dive out of the way of a reversing vehicle after a road rage confrontation on Domain Rd in Pāpāmoa Beach yesterday afternoon. Police arrived at the scene shortly after 2pm on Tuesday to investigate reports of a dispute between road users that involved an alleged knife threat and physical altercations.
From Brake-Checking to Blade
The ordeal began when the father’s family vehicle was subjected to brake-checking and erratic driving. After being cut off, the father admitted to winding down his window to confront the other driver. The situation spiraled at the Pāpāmoa East Interchange when a passenger from the second vehicle exited the cabin brandishing a knife. The father described a physical struggle, stating he had to defend his family while being targeted with the weapon. During the fray, the mother was allegedly punched in the face multiple times while their young children watched from inside the car.
Screeching Tires and Near-Misses
The confrontation reached a violent crescendo when the opposing driver shifted into reverse. The father stood in front of his own vehicle to shield it from impact, only to be forced to jump clear as the car accelerated backward. The mother described hearing the sound of screeching tires during this moment, noting that her husband could have been killed. The family has since expressed that they feel unsafe on the roads following the event.
The Search for Accountability
A police spokesperson confirmed that authorities attended the scene and are currently making enquiries. Officials have requested that anyone with relevant information regarding the events on Domain Rd contact them.
