Headline: Swiss Couple Embarks on Sizilian Adventure in ‘Auf und Davon’
Location: Zurich, Zunzgen, Sizilien, Taormina
Subhead: Artist Patrick Lo Giudice and his wife Sabina Kilchemann trade Swiss life for a new beginning on the Mediterranean island.
Art is Patrick Lo Giudice’s lifelong passion. Inspired by his art-connoisseur mother, he discovered his love for art at an early age, immersing himself in the works of the Impressionists, Expressionists, and classical modernists. His unique style, particularly in wax painting or Enkaustik, has become his signature. "You have to let go of the paintings and pass them on," Lo Giudice says, acknowledging the deep personal connections he forms with his artworks.
Lo Giudice and Kilchemann, a naturopath, have left their serene life in Zunzgen, Oberbaselbiet, to chase the allure of southern Italy and the Mediterranean island of Sizilien. They’ve bought a plot near the tourist hotspot Taormina, complete with an old restaurant, dance hall, and a panoramic view of the sea and Mount Etna. Their vision: transforming the space into a seminar and event venue.
Though excited, they’re also respectful of the challenges ahead. "It would be a lie to say we don’t have existential fears. But our motto is: step by step. Things always work out, and sometimes a door opens just when you least expect it," they say.
Lo Giudice’s art will accompany him to Sizilien. His works, currently exhibited in Zurich’s Oberdorf and priced between CHF 4,000 to 50,000, will continue to be his creative outlet. The unique Mediterranean light and atmosphere already inspire him: "The light on Sizilien is completely different, especially in spring and fall, when there’s a kind of gleaming light. That’s rare in Switzerland."
