A new documentary, Man on the Run, will explore the life and career of Paul McCartney following the breakup of The Beatles, and his enduring relationship with his late wife, Linda McCartney. The film, directed by Morgan Neville, draws on behind-the-scenes footage and unreleased music to chart McCartney’s path forward after one of the most significant musical separations in history.
A New Chapter After The Beatles
According to a preview of the documentary, McCartney initially believed he would “never write another note of music” after The Beatles disbanded. He formed Wings with Linda McCartney, who was the first woman to shoot a cover for Rolling Stone magazine, alongside former Moody Blues singer Denny Laine and drummer Denny Seiwell. The film will trace Wings’ journey from the initial, lukewarm reception of their debut album, Wild Life, to the success of their third album, Band On the Run.
The documentary also touches on the complex dynamic between McCartney and John Lennon leading up to the Beatles’ split. McCartney describes a growing distance, stating, “Me and John, we were just growing apart, really,” but also affirms a lifelong affection, adding, “We’d had arguments and all of that, but we loved each other all our lives.”
Love and Loss
The film highlights the profound impact Linda McCartney had on Paul’s life after the Beatles. “I had fear of being a grownup,” McCartney narrates, “I felt very depressed but I was very lucky because I had Linda.” The couple met in May 1967, married approximately two years later, and remained together for 29 years until Linda’s death from breast cancer on April 17, 1998.
Morgan Neville, the director, has previously helmed acclaimed documentaries including the Oscar-winning 20 Feet From Stardom, Keith Richards: Under the Influence, and Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, With Dave Letterman.
