Power Crisis Sparks Call for Resignations in Bulgarian Energy Sector
Citing ongoing power outages and crises, Delian Peevski, the leader of "DPS-Novo vreme," has demanded immediate resignations from the energy sector’s top brass. In a statement issued today, Peevski singled out Ivan Ivanov, Alexander Jordanov, Blagoy Golubarev, Dimitar Kochkov, and Penka Trendafilova—members of the State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (SEWRC)—urging them to step down in the face of the devastating power shortage affecting thousands of households and hundreds of settlements across the country.
"We support every fair protest from those affected by the power crisis," Peevski said. "DPS-Novo vreme will introduce a proposal in the National Assembly to dismiss the SEWRC members and initiate the process of electing a new regulatory body." Peevski added that the authorities have failed to meet their responsibilities, leaving citizens without adequate power supply.
Peevski further criticized the SEWRC for announcing an extraordinary inspection during the crisis, only to disappear from the public eye once again. "They should stop hiding behind expired mandates, insufficient authority, or challenging weather conditions and take responsibility for their failure to maintain the Electricity Distribution System," Peevski said, questioning potential ties between the committee members and business interests.
Citing episodes of power disruption due to snowfall and the inability of distribution companies to keep up with network maintenance, Peevski stressed the need for a resolution. "The resourcefulness of Bulgarian taxpayers is being squandered on these utilities, and it’s unacceptable that their request for a 9% price hike effective January 1, 2025, is even being considered," Peevski concluded.
