Title: Agenas Director General Mantoan Steps Down: Who’s the Next in Line?
In recent hours, top regional administrators and national political figures, including high-ranking members of the State-Regions Conference, have been busy finding a replacement for Domenico Mantoan, the outgoing Director General of Agenas, the national agency that coordinates Italy‘s healthcare facilities and ULSS.
As reported by Venetian and national media outlets such as Quotidiano Sanità and VicenzaToday, Mantoan is set to retire, leaving behind significant shoes to fill. The 67-year-old from Brendola, considered a prominent figure in Italy’s healthcare sector, has served as Agenas’ Director General since December 2020. A veteran of the public health sector, Mantoan has long been a powerful figure in Venetian healthcare, earning a reputation for keeping even the region’s influential League Governor, Luca Zaia, in check.
Despite a career marked by ups and downs, Mantoan’s political connections have remained robust. His appointment to Agenas’ top job was reportedly the result of a high-level agreement between the PD, FI, and the League. Now, whispers in political corridors suggest that Mantoan may not be leaving the healthcare sector entirely. Rumors have reached as high as the Italian Senate, hinting at a new role for Mantoan in a leading Venetian healthcare facility.
Sources indicate that Mantoan could potentially take on the position of CEO at the Pederzoli Hospital in Peschiera del Garda, Verona. This unique structure is a private company but acts as a public healthcare provider, accredited by the Veneto Region.
Meanwhile, a second key position at Agenas has also been vacated. President Enrico Coscioni has stepped down amidst a legal investigation related to his medical practice. A temporary replacement is expected, with Veneto’s Health Minister Manuela Lanzarin, a member of the League, potentially stepping in as acting president.
As the search for Mantoan’s successor begins, the Italian healthcare system watches and waits for the next chapter in this high-stakes game of succession.
