Dwindling Numbers: Physiotherapists Quit Amid Low Wages in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is facing a considerable exodus of physiotherapists, primarily due to dissatisfactory salaries, leaving the sector grappling with a critical workforce shortage. According to a recent survey by the Dutch Association of Physiotherapists (KNGF), around 25% of physiotherapists have considered leaving their jobs due to financial pressures.

"Without a resolution, there won’t be any physiotherapists left," warns Sjoerd Haverkorn, chairman of the KNGF. The situation has worsened over the years, with the number of physiotherapists in the Netherlands dwindling by 15% between 2012 and 2021. This dire shortage alarms experts as it might lead to longer waiting times for patients seeking treatment.

The primary reason behind this brain drain is the low remuneration for physiotherapists. Despite their crucial role in maintaining and improving patients’ health, especially during the ongoing pandemic, their salaries have stagnated. Currently, the average monthly income for a physiotherapist stands at around €2,800, barely meeting the cost of living.

Moreover, the workload has increased significantly in recent years, adding to the stress and burnout cases among physiotherapists. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated the situation, with physiotherapists working tirelessly in hospitals and rehab centers, yet failing to see their salaries reflTect their increased efforts.

The KNGF has called on the government and healthcare insurers to prioritize the profession and address the wage issue. "Physiotherapy is a vital part of healthcare. Yet, we are losing many talented professionals due to dismal salaries," says Haverkorn. The association also urges physiotherapists to voice their concerns and demand fair wages to ensure the future of the profession.

As the situation unfolds, patients, physiotherapists, and the healthcare system could face significant challenges, highlighting the urgent need for action to address the growing crisis in the Netherlands’ physiotherapy sector.
