The incoming American president, Donald Trump, has disclosed that a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin is in the works. According to Trump, Putin is keen on arranging the meeting, although details about the timing remain scarce.
Trump shared this information during a press conference with republican governors at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. While he offered no specifics about when or where the meeting might occur, he did express Putin’s eagerness to engage in dialogue.
"We’re looking at meeting with the Russians," Trump stated. "President Putin wants to meet, and we’ll see what happens."
Trump’s return to the White House on January 20 has sparked hopes of diplomatic progress in ending the war between Russia and Ukraine. However, concerns in Kyiv persist that any swift resolution might come at a high cost for the country.
Advisers to Trump have hinted at potential proposals that would essentially hand over significant portions of Ukrainian territory to Russia in the foreseeable future.
Earlier on Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that Putin would welcome Trump’s desire for contact. However, he suggested it would be more appropriate to wait until Trump assumes office before any formal requests are made.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asserted that Trump could play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of the 34-month conflict with Russia and in halting Putin’s advance.
