Poland Warns European Allies Against Negotiating Ukraine Peace Without Eastern Europe
Poland has issued a direct warning to its European allies against negotiating a settlement to the war in Ukraine without accounting for Eastern Europe’s security interests, as reported by dnes.bg. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated during a discussion in Warsaw that the region is the most directly exposed to the consequences of the conflict’s expansion.
“The last thing we want is for Western Europe to negotiate with Russia, bypassing Eastern Europe,” Sikorski said, noting that Finland, Norway, the Baltic states, and Poland share direct borders with Russia. The Polish foreign minister emphasized that the region represents approximately 120 million people who cannot be excluded from the diplomatic conversation.
Eastern European Security Concerns Over Russian Intentions
For years, Eastern European nations urged their Western partners to view Russia primarily as a security threat, warnings largely left unheard following the 2014 illegal annexation of Crimea until the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Addressing European counterparts, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk urged leaders to remain very cautious regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s true intentions and to maintain a realistic view of US-led diplomatic processes.
Tusk warned that Putin may have fewer incentives to reach an agreement during the winter months, coinciding with a sustained Russian air campaign targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure to cause widespread suffering.

Trilateral Talks Spark European Representation Disputes
The diplomatic push involves upcoming technical-level trilateral talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the US in Abu Dhabi. These follow a 90-minute phone call between Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, and Putin. Meanwhile, the E3 group—France, Germany, and the United Kingdom—alongside the European Commission and NATO, prepared to join multilateral talks following the Abu Dhabi meeting.
Rapporteur reports internal European Union disputes regarding who should represent the bloc in potential peace talks, noting that no official European participation is currently scheduled for trilateral negotiations. Czech President Petr Pavel warned via Ceske Noviny that if Europe fails to join negotiations with its own demands, Russia, the US, and China risk deciding Ukraine’s fate without European input.

Sikorski voiced agreement with Meloni, stressing that Europe requires legitimate representation because it pays the price for the war.
Disagreements Over US Energy Proposals and Sanctions
Washington’s approach of offering economic deals to Moscow as a diplomatic incentive has drawn strong European backlash, particularly a reported proposal to resume Russian energy deliveries to Europe.
