Breaking News: Polar Low Threatens Nordland as Snow Sweeps Norway
A polar low, a weather phenomenon known for rapid changes in wind strength and direction, is expected to impact Nordland county on Thursday afternoon, according to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute’s warning on Yr.no. The institute warns of strong winds and heavy snow showers.
"Expect gusts ranging from moderate to strong, with winds blowing from a northwesterly or variable direction," the warning reads. These abrupt weather changes can lead to reduced visibility, snowy roads, and difficult travel conditions.
Meanwhile, heavy snowfall is reported in parts of Nordvestlandet and southern Trøndelag, which combined with the polar low could result in snowdrifts, reduced visibility, and hazardous travel. Snow continues to cause issues across the country, with a yellow warning for snow in parts of Østlandet. However, this warning is expected to decrease by Wednesday afternoon.
The snowy conditions have already caused challenges on the roads, with a car carrying four people skidding off the road in Drammen on Wednesday afternoon. All four occupants were able to exit the vehicle safely and received medical attention.
The weather has also caused delays in rail transport. Go-Ahead has reported delays on several of their trains between Stavanger and Oslo, specifically along the Sørlandsbanen between Snartemo and the Vennesla area.
