In an exclusive interview with Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), seasoned political PR expert Diana Damyanova shared her insights into the political climate of Bulgaria as we step into 2024. During the broadcast of "12+4," she reflected on the political scene and offered her predictions for the coming year.
Damyanova believes that after the stagnation of the past couple of years, a political force will emerge to clearly and consistently represent the interests of the democratic community. While she cannot specify the timeline for this shift, she expects it to occur within the next five years. Currently, she sees the political scene moving towards two opposing poles, with GERB at one end. The other pole, she suggests, could be occupied by a left-leaning force, potentially from the presidency, or a centrist party focused on Bulgarians’ economic concerns.
Damyanova also noted a positive trend: Bulgarians are paying less attention to the political class, instead finding solace in individual achievements, sports, and cultural events. However, she regrets that no one has praise for the Bulgarian public life, which she describes as a total swamp that the country is hoping to emerge from.
Damyanova expressed concern that the democratic door opened in 2020 by the protesters has been closed in 2024. She blames GERB’s inclusion in the government while the Democratic Bulgaria (DB) coalition, despite being the second largest political force, refuses to participate. DB, she believes, wants to control the government entirely, not sharing power with GERB, a strategy she deems ill-advised.
Damyanova predicts a split within DB, with DB’s more rational wing understanding the need to govern and cooperate, rather than vainly pursue revolutionary changes.
