Ski Season Chaos: governing premier, Dimitar Glavchev, wades through unplowed snow to reach Vitosha‘s summit

Bulgaria’s serving premier, Dimitar Glavchev, found himself in an unexpected snowy adventure yesterday as he attempted to ascend Vitosha Mountain via the Boyan Petrov path. Despite the promise of a new ski season, the route remained unplowed on December 26, leading to a kilometers-long traffic jam and temporary suspension of city transport.

The premier, known for his avid mountaineering, took to Facebook to express his surprise at the uncleared path. "They said the municipality hadn’t cleaned it, so we decided to check. No one had ‘cleared’ the Boyan Petrov path. The route to ‘Zlatni Mostove’ was cleared ‘down to asphalt,’ but above was almost impassable (towards ‘Momina Skala’ and ‘Kopito’)," he wrote.

The unplowed path caused a chain of inconveniences, with numerous skiers and hikers expressing their disappointment at not being able to reach the summit. The situation was exacerbated when a tree fell across the road, further hindering access.

Glavchev’s inaccessibility to the ski resorts sparked public outcry, with many questioning why the municipality had not prepared the path for the season’s opening. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adequate planning and preparation for seasonal changes and activities, especially in areas that rely heavily on tourism.

In response to the incident, the Sofia Municipality has since vowed to prioritize the clearing and maintenance of Vitosha’s paths to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all winter sports enthusiasts.
