Ukraine‘s 2024: A Year of Strategic Prisoner Exchanges and Repatriation of Fallen Heroes

In an annual review marked by resilience and achievement, Ukraine’s military intelligence chief, Kirill Budanov, reflected on a challenging yet productive year. One of the most notable successes was the liberation of 356 more individuals from captivity in 2024 compared to the previous year.

Throughout the year, Ukraine orchestrated 11 prisoner exchanges, culminating in the liberating of 1358 citizens who were previously held captive by Russia. This significant feat underscores Ukraine’s commitment to bringing its citizens back home.

Moreover, 2024 saw a notable increase in the number of fallen Ukrainian heroes being returned to their homeland. Andrei Yousov, the deputy head of the Coordination Staff, revealed that the number of returned bodies had tripled compared to previous years, thanks to effective negotiations and searches.

"This demonstrates our enhanced capabilities in search and negotiation procedures," Yousov commented, expressing optimism about the future of such efforts.
