Article:
Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi (KPK) named Secretary General of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Hasto Kristiyanto, as a suspect in a bribery case involving ex-Commissioner of the General Election Commission (KPU) Wahyu Setiawan.
KPK made the announcement at a press conference at the KPK Head Office, Jakarta, on Tuesday (24/12/2024). KPK Chairman Setyo Budiyanto stated that the KPK prosecutor has strong evidence that Hasto and his associate Harun Masiku gave a bribe to Wahyu Setiawan.
Hasto is suspected of violating Article 5 Paragraph (1) Letter a or b or Article 13 of Law Number 31 of 1999 on the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Corruption and Article 55 Paragraph (1) Item 1 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) Jointly. Meanwhile, in the case of obstruction of justice, Hasto is suspected of violating Article 21 of Law Number 31 of 1999 on the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Corruption Jointly.
Earlier, a former KPK investigator, Novel Baswedan, stated that Hasto had been proposed as a suspect since 2020. "As far as I can remember, since the beginning of 2020, the investigator’s proposal for Hasto as a suspect was based on sufficient evidence, and at that time, the head office did not want [to approve it], and asked [KPK] to arrest Harun Masiku first," Novel said, as quoted from Kompas TV, on Tuesday (24/12/2024).
KPK’s delay in processing the case of alleged bribery involving ex-KPU commissioner Wahyu Setiawan has been criticized as lengthy. Meanwhile, all cases handled by KPK should ideally be processed promptly to avoid the perception of political influence.
Just a day earlier, Hasto was trending on Twitter following news of his potential status as a suspect. His photo then disappeared from the DPP PDI-P website.
