Tuchel Criticises England Performance

Tuchel’s Critique of the Quarter-Final Performance

England head coach Thomas Tuchel expressed frustration with his team’s performance following their extra-time quarter-final victory over Norway in Miami. Despite securing a semi-final spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Tuchel labeled the display sloppy and lucky, emphasizing that his squad must improve to win the tournament.

Tuchel’s Critique of the Quarter-Final Performance

When French referee Clement Turpin signalled the end of the match, Tuchel’s exhausted players sank to their knees in celebration after being taken to extra-time by Norway. While the result keeps England’s tournament hopes alive, the manager was blunt in his assessment of the technical execution on the pitch.

“We got lucky,” Tuchel said after the match. “We made life very, very difficult for ourselves. The result is fantastic. We are in the last four. It’s amazing but [I am] not happy with the performance – in every sense. We made life difficult for us in the way we played and how we played – sloppy, a lot of technical mistakes, not fast enough, not repetitive enough.”

Tuchel noted that Norway had opportunities to capitalize on England’s errors, including taking the lead, missing a chance to make it 2-0, having a goal disallowed, and hitting the bar. Jude Bellingham, who struck in the 47th and 93rd minutes, offered a different perspective when questioned about the manager’s criticism. “Yeah well, whatever,” Bellingham replied. “It’s difficult out there, it’s a tough shift. All the players have put in a tough shift. My thoughts and appreciation goes to the players out there who put in a great shift.”

During the on-pitch celebrations, Bellingham had accidentally clashed heads with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, while captain Harry Kane lined up with his team-mates to acknowledge the thousands of fans who had made the long journey to Florida. Tuchel attributed the win to one specific factor: “This is pure mentality,” he said.

Building a New Identity Under Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel was appointed as the England men’s senior head coach on Wednesday 16 October 2024, starting his new role on 1 January 2025. Having signed an initial 18-month contract, Tuchel is joined by assistant coach Anthony Barry. This appointment marked Tuchel’s first role in international football following a trophy-laden domestic career with spells at Augsburg, Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich. He led teams to league titles and domestic cup competitions in Germany and France, and won the UEFA Champions League title with Chelsea in 2021.

Tuchel’s connection to the squad is bolstered by his history with several key players. During his time at Chelsea, he coached Mason Mount, Ben Chilwell, Reece James, Conor Gallagher, and Fikayo Tomori. He has also worked with Harry Kane during his career. Tuchel has stated, “I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already.”

Unlike previous England managers, Tuchel is not weighed down by the ghosts of England tournaments past, such as the semi-final losses to Germany at Italia 90 and Euro 96. He does not sing the national anthem, viewing the role through the lens of a professional seeking victory rather than a cultural connection.

Tournament Progression and Future Outlook

England’s success in reaching the semi-finals follows a World Cup qualification campaign. In February 2026, ahead of the summer’s tournament, Tuchel extended his stay for a further two years, through to UEFA EURO 2028 in the UK and Ireland. His football journey, which began as a youngster under his father at the local junior grassroots club TSV Krumbach, has now brought him to the brink of a World Cup final.
