Ecatepec Residents Block Highway Over Christmas Eve Water Shortage

Citizens of Ecatepec, a municipality in the State of Mexico, have taken to the streets to protest a water shortage that has left them without access to potable water days before Nochebuena. Around 40 residents have blocked off both directions of the Lechería-Texcoco federal highway at Los Héroes Ecatepec Quinta Sección.

The demonstrators attribute the water crisis to a lack of an operator in the main well that supplies their community. Despite the pressing need for water during the holiday season, the well has remained idle, leaving residents without a crucial resource. Protesters hold banners that read, "No más, se está desperdiciando el agua" (No more, it’s being wasted) and "urge operador en el pozo 5ta sección" (urgent need for an operator at the 5th section well).

Motorists trying to navigate the blockade have had to resort to alternative routes such as Vía Morelos and Avenida Central-Carlos Hank González, with some becoming stuck near Ojo de Agua. As of now, no local authorities have been reported at the scene.

The residents of Ecatepec hope that their demonstration will draw attention to their plight and force authorities to address the water shortage in time for Christmas.
