Toilet‘s Closing Time Drives Tourists to Scenic (and Rude) Alternatives in Lofoten
Article:
Lofoten’s effort to attract tourists year-round has paid off, with a notable influx of visitors from Asia this winter. However, the Archipelago’s most popular destination, Henningsvær, is facing an unexpected challenge – the absence of public toilets during the off-season.
The commune’s only public toilets close on October 1st and reopen in late March, leaving tourists with few options. Locals report sightings of tourists relieving themselves in public, behind buildings, and even in privates yards.
quote Kjersti Axelsen, chair of the Henningsvær Inhabitants’ Association, shared, "We receive regular reports of tourists using the outdoors as their toilet. We can only hope they’re just answering nature’s call."
Hanne Hovde, a local resident, observed, "It’s an everyday occurrence. People have been seen behind the hall, and on the hotel’s parking lot."
The issue has persisted for years, with no resolution from the local authorities. The public toilets, a gift from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration to the inhabitants, are now ‘closed for the season,’ a sign informs visitors.
quote Hilde Hovde, another concerned resident, lamented, "We’ve brought this up repeatedly. The commune shuts them down every year, claiming lack of funds. This is unacceptable; it impacts our quality of life."
Currently, the commune defines the tourist season from April 1st to October 1st. However, given the increasing demand for year-round tourism, Vågan municipality is exploring options to cater to tourists even in the off-peak season.
quote Vidar Thom Benjaminsen, the municipality’s mayor, acknowledged, "We’re facing significant economic challenges, yet we must find a solution. We’re hopeful that the visitor tax implementation will help us maintain public services like toilets year-round."
In the meantime, tourists are advised to plan their visits accordingly, respect local residents and properties, and support local businesses by using their facilities when available.
