Headline: Russian Army Advances South of Strategic Ukrainian City, Threatening Dnipropetrovsk
Article:
The Russian military has taken control of eight villages south of the strategic city of Pokrovsk since the beginning of the year, according to German news outlet Bild’s military correspondent, Julian Röpcke. The advance, which has faced minimal resistance on the ground but has been targeted by Ukrainian drones, is another sign of Russia’s growing momentum in the region.
Rather than launching a direct assault on Pokrovsk, Russian forces have been skirting around it from the south, a tactic they have employed elsewhere in the conflict. Despite significant drone attacks, Ukraine‘s military, which is currently facing manpower shortages, has been unable to halt the Russians’ progress, although it has managed to slow it down.
Röpcke predicts that the fighting could soon spread westwards into the Dnipropetrovsk region, with Russian troops now just seven kilometers away. The region, home to millions of Ukrainian residents and hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons, has so far been spared from the heaviest fighting.
This looming threat echoes warnings from former Ukrainian Army commander Anatoly schematic, who recently insisted that Ukrainian troops should begin preparations for the defense of Dnipropetrovsk, along with the cities of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.
