Puglia‘s Influenza-Like Illnesses: Incidence Drops, But Trend Raises Concerns Amidst Pending School Reopening
The incidence of influenza-like syndromes in Puglia stands at 9.56 cases per 1,000 assisted individuals, slightly lower than the national average of 10.13 cases per 1,000 assisted individuals, as per the ‘RespiVirNet’ surveillance report by the Higher Health Institute (ISS). Despite the current figures being lower than the same period last season, regional health authorities are bracing for potential increases.
Regional data reflects a growing trend across all age groups, putting Puglia on a trajectory that mirrors the peak influenza seasons of 2023-2024. In that period, the weekly incidence peaked at 17.68 cases per 1,000 assisted individuals in week 51 and 19.63 in week 52.
As of January 3, 2025, Puglia’s hospitals are caring for 15 influenza patients, with 4 being asymptomatic and 8 exhibiting mild symptoms. No severe or complicated cases have been reported. However, regional health officials are preparing for a possible increase as schools reopen following the holiday season.
Vice President and Regional Health Minister Raffaele Piemontese emphasized, "We haven’t yet reached the peak of the influenzal season, and the return to school could facilitate further contagion."
Vaccination campaigns in Puglia have gained momentum, thanks to a revamped healthcare network involving prevention departments, general practitioners, pediatricians, and pharmacies.
