Breaking: Ukrainian Forces Launch Major Offensive in Kursk Region
In a significant development, the Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) in Ukraine has announced that Ukrainian forces have launched attacks on Russian positions in several directions in the Kursk region. This comes as a surprise to Russian forces, according to CCD head, Andrei Kovalenko. "The Kursk region is experiencing major concerns as Russian forces have been attacked on several fronts," he stated in a message.
Andrei Yermak, the head of the Presidential Office of Ukraine, also acknowledged these actions, commenting, "Kursk region, good news. Russia is getting what it deserves."
Russian war correspondents have reported that Ukrainian troops are pushing forward from the town of Sudzha towards the villages of Bolshoye Soldatskoye and Ruskoye Porechye, as well as the homestead of Berdinskoye. Notably, Bolshoye Soldatskoye is situated approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Sudzha, which was recently liberated by Ukrainian forces, and around 80 kilometers from the direction of Kursk.
Russian Telegram channels have further claimed that Ukraine has assembled six brigades for the attack, pushing ahead with armored groups towards Bolshoye Soldatskoye and Berdinskoye along the 38K-004 highway, and have also mounted assaults on Russian positions in the village of Pushkarnoye.
Rosmedia outlets later issued a claim that Berdinskoye had been captured, with the alleged main objective of Ukrainian forces being the seizure of the nuclear power station in Kursk. However, this contradicts earlier statements made by President Vladimir Zelensky, who had noted in late October that while Ukraine could have taken control of the Kursk nuclear power plant, it had no intention of doing so.
Officially, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has not yet released detailed information about the current situation in the Kursk region. Neither has Russia commented on the situation, but it is known that Yunnus-Bek Yevkurov, deputy defense minister of the Russian Federation, has arrived in Kursk.
The operaation in the Kursk region holds significant importance. In the summer, President Zelensky stated that the operation had prevented the occupation of parts of the Kharkiv, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions by Russia, effectively creating a buffer zone within Russian territory. Recently, Zelensky has also remarked that the Kursk operation could serve as a strong diplomatic card for Ukraine, particularly with countries in the Global South.
