Culiacán Police Commander Assassinated in Broad Daylight
A commander of the Municipal Police in Culiacán, identified as Juan Carlos, was gunned down this morning, Tuesday, January 7, after being pursued on the Bulevar de Las Torres in the Barrancos neighborhood. The supervisor operative of the Culiacán police was intercepted by unknown armed civilians around 8:00 AM as he drove along the avenue between Antonio Nakayama and Francisco R. Serrano streets.
The police commander’s vehicle, a silver Jetta, was struck by multiple bullets, causing him to lose control and crash into a CFE power pole. According to the Sinaloa State Secretariat of Public Security and Municipal Transit, Juan Carlos was currently serving as a supervisor operative after previously being assigned to the Sanalona municipality. However, he was not accompanied by his security detail at the time of the attack.
Neighborhood residents heard the gunfire and called 911, leading local authorities to quickly arrive at the scene. The area was cordoned off by personnel from the Municipal Police, State Preventive Police, and the Mexican military. Forensic experts collected evidence, including at least 11 spent casings from firearms. The commander’s body was transported to the forensic service for an autopsy and then released to his family.
This latest incident adds to the growing violence plaguing Culiacán, with no suspects currently detained in connection with the police commander’s assassination. Witnesses reported that Juan Carlos had just finished his shift when he was targeted by the unknown assailants.
