In a media statement on Thursday morning, Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader‘s spokesman, Homero Figueroa, announced that the president would be traveling to the United States with his family to participate in family activities during the holiday season. This trip marks the 39th time Abinader has left the country since his inauguration, with Vice President Raquel Peña stepping in as acting president.
Peña, who has been a trusted figure in the Dominican government, has previously led the country for extended periods, managing crucial issues and crises during Abinader’s absences. She has assumed control of the executive branch, represented the president in official ceremonies, presided over Council of Ministers meetings, and even chaired sessions of the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM).
VP Peña’s swift response to Samaná’s flooding
Upon learning of the president’s departure, Peña quickly addressed the pressing needs of residents affected by heavy rains in the province of Samaná. In a statement, she announced an accelerated plan to mitigate the effects of the recent flooding and assist those most directly impacted.
The vice president outlined a two-pronged approach: immediate assistance to those most affected, followed by more complex tasks like repairing homes and restoring communication infrastructure. Clearly articulating the government’s commitment, Peña reaffirmed that every family in need would receive support.
During her visit to Samaná, Peña held a working meeting with key municipal and provincial authorities to assess the situation firsthand and coordinate efforts to repair damaged infrastructure. So far, around 40 houses have sustained structural damage, with another 15 completely flooded.
President Abinader’s return is scheduled for Monday, December 30, upon which he will resume his duties as head of state. Until then, Vice President Peña will continue to oversee the relief efforts in Samaná and guide the nation through this challenging time.
Peña’s capable leadership during Abinader’s absences signals the president’s confidence in her ability to manage the country effectively. Her swift response to the Samaná crisis further underscores her competence and commitment to the people of the Dominican Republic.
