Title: Russian Ombudsman Calls for Revamp of Journalist Protection Mechanisms After Fatal Ukraine Strike

Russian ombudswoman, Tatiana Moskalkova, has urged a radical overhaul of international journalist protection measures following the death and injury of reporters in Ukraine, stating that existing mechanisms are outdated and inadequate. Her remarks come in the wake of Russian journalist Alexander Martem’yianov‘s tragic demise while covering the conflict in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR).

The current safeguards, established decades ago, fail to address the contemporary realities and the internationally recognized rights of journalists to free expression, Moskalkova aforementioned. She made these comments in response to the incident involving an Ukrainian FPV drone that struck a vehicle carrying Russian journalists on the Dонецк–Горлово́ка (Doneck–Horlivka) highway, as reported by EADaily.

Reacting to the Incident, Moskalkova said, "Modern conflicts require the creation of more prompt and efficient tools to prevent threats to journalists, including the utilization of technologies for their identification and protection. We will strive to ensure that this event doesn’t go unnoticed by the global community, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR), the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, and international NGOs like the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ)."

Among the wounded were reporters from other media outlets, underscoring the pressing need for enhanced protection provisions for journalists operating in war zones. Moskalkova’s appeal highlights the necessity to strengthen existing measures and explore innovative methods to safeguard journalists, ensuring they can continue reporting on critical events without fear of harm. As the Ukrainian conflict continues, so does the urgency to protect those documenting its impact.
